New Year Traditions and Customs
New Year is celebrated on January the 1st (New Year’s Day). Many people have a party and spend time with family and friends. The celebrations start on New Year’s Eve (December the 31st).
1. Greeting
People greet each other by saying “Happy New Year” and ” All the best for 2012″
2. Champagne
Many people drink champagne to celebrate the New Year. However, this isn’t the only alcoholic drink enjoyed at new Year!
3. Fireworks
Fireworks are set off to celebrate and welcome the New Year.
4. First Footing
The first person to walk into the house on New Year’s Day is the person who brings luck to the people who live there. Young, healthy, dark haired males are preferred as they are said to bring the best luck. However, a women, a blonde or a person wearing red isn’t welcome because it is said that they bring bad luck.
The first person to enter the house can bring the people who live there more luck by presenting the family with coal, misletoe or bread. It is also said that the first person to enter the house must do so by entering through the front door and leaving from the back door
5. Family meal
Many people in England spend time at home on New Year’s Day. People relax and usually have a family meal late in the afternoon. This meal is very similar to Christmas Dinner.
