My name is Matthew and I am from a town called Doncaster in the north of England. My home town has a football team called Doncaster Rovers. The team’s nickname is ‘Donny Rovers’ It is an old football club; founded in 1879!
When I was younger I often went to watch Doncaster Rovers with my father. We both enjoyed cheering on our favourite team even if they were losing.
During half-time, my father and I would go to the food and drink kiosk to get a delicious pie and a cup of bovril.
The fans often sang songs for the players and the players would often respond by clapping their hands. My father and I enjoyed the lively atmosphere and the funny things some of the fans would shout out.
Doncaster has a mascot called ‘Donny the dog’. There is a picture of it below.
Doncaster Rovers aren’t a famous football team outside England. People who ask which football team I support are always surprised when I say Doncaster Rovers.
I no longer live in England, so I cannot watch my favourite team play live. However, I watch them as often as I can on the internet.
I hope that one day they can get into the famous Premiership League. I would love to see them play against teams like Manchester United.
