Bakewell pudding is an English dessert that comes from a small town called Bakewell in Derbyshire.
Bakewell pudding is a flaky pastry pie with a jam and almond paste filling. It’s delicious hot or cold and it’s traditionally served with custard or whipped cream.
Bakewell pudding was first made around 1820 in a pub called the Rutland Arms in Bakewell. It is thought that the landlady of the pub asked the cook to bake some jam tarts, but the cook made a mistake with the recipe and invented the Bakewell pudding. It was so popular with the customers in the pub that they decided to make more.
There are three shops in Bakewell that claim to use the original recipe. ‘The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop’ is the most popular place. It has a bakery on the first floor where you can buy freshly made Bakewell puddings, and it has a tea room on the second floor where you can have a delicious Bakewell pudding with a cup of tea or coffee.
The Rutland Arms hotel is still open today. If you are planning a trip to Derbyshire, it’s a very convenient place to stay.
Jane Austen visited Bakewell in 1811 and stayed at the Rutland Arms Hotel while she was traveling around Derbyshire. She visited many places nearby Bakewell and it helped her to write her famous novel ‘Pride and Prejudice’.
If you visit the Rutland Arms, there is a notice outside the hotel room explaining about Jane Austen’s stay.
