April’s English Expressions

1. a late bloomer

Meaning: When someone becomes successful later than expected

Examples

Colonel Sanders started KFC when he was in his 60s. He was definitely a late bloomer.

Taikichiro Mori was another late bloomer. He founded his successful company in his mid 50s.

A: Did you know that John has just started learning the guitar? He’s 65!

B:It’s great isn’t it? He’s definitely a late bloomer. He learnt to swim last year too.

 

 

2. bug (someone)

Meaning: Annoy someone

Example

A: Steven, Steven, Steven, Steven, Steven, Steven, Steven

B: John, stop bugging me, I’m trying to concentrate.

A: I’m stressed. My mother keeps bugging me to clean my room.

B: Why don’t you clean it, then she’ll stop bugging you!

 

 

3. give (someone) a hand

Meaning: Help someone

Example

A: That piano is too heavy to move by yourself. I’ll give you a hand. 

B: Thanks.

A: Can you give me a hand taking the suitcases to the car?

B: Sure. I’ll just get my shoes.

 

 

Examples

A: What’s up? You look stressed.

B: My boss told me to write this report but it’s going to take a long time. It’s bugging me.

A: Can I give you a hand with it?

B: Thanks! That would be a great help.
