A Christmas tree is a tree that is decorated with lights, ornaments, tinsel, and sweets (candy). The most common type of Christmas tree is a pine tree. Many people decorate artificial trees these days because they are easier to take care of and maintain.

Christmas presents are the gifts exchanged at Christmas. Christmas presents are usually placed under the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. Christmas presents are traditionally opened on Christmas Day.
Christmas pudding (10)
Christmas pudding is a steamed cake made with dried fruits and brandy. It has a rich taste and its quite heavy, but it’s very delicious. It’s a traditional part of Christmas dinner.
Christmas cracker (4a+b)
A Christmas cracker is a small cardboard tube wrapped in colourful paper. Inside the tube there is usually a paper hat, a small gift, and a motto. One person holds each end of the cracker and they pull it until it breaks. The person who is holding the biggest piece wins the contents of the tube. Christmas crackers are usually ‘pulled’ before eating Christmas dinner.
Christmas carol (13)
The people in the picture are singing Christmas carols. Christmas carols are songs that are sung during the Christmas season. The lyrics of Christmas carols are all about Christmas. ‘Jingle Bells’ is one example of a Christmas carol.
Christmas card (15)
People exchange Christmas cards during the weeks before Christmas Day. A traditional Christmas card message is “Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year”.
Christmas Eve (5)
The 24th of December is called ‘Christmas Eve’. ‘Eve’ means ‘the day before’, so Christmas Eve is the day before Christmas. Children get excited on Christmas Eve and they hang up a stocking before they go to bed, hoping that Father Christmas will visit their house overnight.
Christmas Day (9)
The 25th of December is called ‘Christmas Day’. For religious people, Christmas Day is celebrated as the birthday of Jesus Christ. For people who are not so religious, it’s simply a day that is spent with family and close friends, eating, drinking, exchanging gifts, and having fun. Christmas Day is a National Holiday in the UK (and many other countries), and almost everywhere is closed, and almost everyone is off work.
Boxing Day (14)
The 26th of December is called ‘Boxing Day’. Boxing Day is also a National Holiday in the UK, although some shops will open. The 26th of December is called Boxing Day because of a very old tradition of putting small gifts and leftover food from Christmas dinner in boxes, and giving them to poor people. Also, the rich and upper class had many staff and servants working in their palaces, however the staff were able to go back to their families on the 26th of December, and were often given Christmas food and gifts in boxes to take with them.

Holly is a plant that has shiny green leaves with spiky edges and small red berries. The combination of dark green and red means that holly is a common Christmas decoration.

A chimney is a structure that allows smoke from a fireplace to exit the building – usually out of the roof. The chimney is also the traditional way that Father Christmas enters each home to deliver his Christmas presents. In the picture, Santa is going to go down the chimney.

A sleigh is a form of transportation usually used on snow. Santa uses a sleigh to travel around the word on Christmas Eve, delivering all his presents.

A wreath is an assortment of flowers, leaves, fruits, and other materials that is made into a circular, ring shape. A wreath is a common Christmas decoration, and people traditionally hang them on their front doors.

Turkey is the traditional meat eaten during Christmas dinner.
reindeer (2)
The traditional story says that Santa’s sleigh is pulled by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen. In 1939 a Children’s story was written which introduced a ninth reindeer called Rudolph. Rudolph had a bright red nose, and he became the lead reindeer – and the most famous reindeer too.
