The First World Cup

The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930.

Many countries were invited to join the competition, but because Uruguay was a long and expensive trip for many teams, only 13 countries took part.

The 13 countries that participated were:

Argentina
Chile
France
Mexico
Yugoslavia
Brazil
Bolivia
Uruguay
Romania
Peru
United States
Paraguay
Belgium

Argentina, The United States, Uruguay, and Yugoslavia reached the semi-finals.

In the first semi-final Argentina beat The United States 6-1. In the second semi final Uruguay also beat Yugoslavia 6-1 to reach the final.

Uruguay beat Argentina 4-2 in the final to become the first winners of the World Cup.
