June’s English 1

 1. be getting on 

Meaning 1 (of people): Be becoming old

Meaning 2 (of time): Be becoming late

2. be off 

Meaning 1: to leave a place

Meaning 2 (of food): to be in a bad condition / stale / out of date

Examples

1.

A: How’s your grandfather doing?

B: He’s getting on a bit now so he can’t walk as fast as he used to.

2.

A: Dad, can I play video games for a while?

B: No it’s getting on. It’s nearly time for bed.

3.

A: Where are you going?

B: I’m off to the supermarket. Would you like anything?

A: Smell this milk. Do you think it’s OK?

B: …Yuck! No don’t drink it, it’s off.

5.

A: So who’s ready for some karaoke?

B: Not me. It’s getting on so I better be off home.I have to work tomorrow.

6.

A: I think I’m getting on. Can you read the use-by-date on this yoghurt pot? It’s too small for my eyes.

B: It says ‘Use by March 2011’. It’s June 1st today, so I think it must be off.
