November’s English 2

1. scary(怖い)

Synonyms: frightening, terrifying, hair-raising, spine-chilling, creepy

Examples

 scary

A: Your Halloween costume isn’t very scary!

 frightening

 A: The horror movie we watched on Halloween was really frightening.

 terrifying

 A: Spiders and snakes are terrifying.

 hair-raising 

A: My best friend isn’t a good driver. Whenever she gives me a lift, it is hair-raising.

 spine-chilling

 A: I read a book last week that was about ghosts. It was spine-chilling.

 creepy

A: Let’s go to a traditional Japanese hotel in the countryside for the weekend!

B: Great idea. I need a break!

A: How about this hotel?

B: I don’t want to go there. It looks creepy. How about this one?

A: OK.

 

2. cold(寒い)

Synonyms: freezing(very cold), wintry, chilly, parky, bitter

Examples

 cold

A: The weather is quite cold today, isn’t it?

B: Yes, it is.

freezing

A: I don’t want to go for a walk today because it is freezing outside!

 wintry

A: I love wintry weather! It reminds me of the Christmas holidays.

 chilly

A: It is a little chilly today, so I am wearing my hat.

parky

A: It’s quite parky, isn’t it? I wish I had put a scarf on!

B: Me too!

bitter

A: The weather has turned bitter, hasn’t it?

B: Yes, it has. I think it might snow tomorrow.
