Summertime

 

 

– Look at the 10 Summertime words and expressions below.

– Read the short story and select the correct missing words.

– Can you make your own sentences, or short story, using the Summertime words?

 

 

1. Soak up the rays
Meaning: Sunbathe
Example: ‘I’m going to relax at the beach and soak up the rays’

2. Sunburn
Meaning: When you have too much sun and your skin turns red and painful
Example: ‘I’ve got terrible sunburn on my shoulders, and it hurts when I wear my T-shirt!’

3. Suntan
Meaning: When your skin gets a little darker because of the sun
Example: ‘You’ve got a nice suntan. Have you been sunbathing?’

4. Suntan lotion (UK) / Sunscreen (US)
Meaning: The cream you put on your skin to protect yourself from getting burned.
Example: ‘I always wear suntan lotion because I have sensitive skin and burn easily’

5. Scorching hot
Meaning: Really hot
Example: ‘I don’t want to go out today because it’s scorching hot‘

6. Heat wave
Meaning: A period of very hot temperatures
Example: ‘We’re having a heat wave at the moment. Please try and keep cool and drink lots of water’

7. Sweat buckets
Meaning: Sweat a lot
Example: ‘I’m sweating buckets today. I can’t believe how hot it is!’

8. Cool off
Meaning: Make yourself cooler
Example: ‘The best way to cool off is to go for a swim!’

9. Take a dip
Meaning: Go for a quick swim
Example: ‘I’m going to take a dip in the pool and cool off’

10. Breeze
Meaning: A light refreshing wind
Example: ‘It’s a really hot day, but there’s a nice breeze that makes it comfortable’

 


 

Short story task: Read the story and choose the correct missing word from the choices at the end.

 

I went to the beach a couple of weeks ago with my friends. We played some games like volleyball and Frisbee, and sometimes (1)_____ in the sea to (2)_____. We (3)_____ on some sun-loungers, and we all got very nice (4)_____ except one of my friends who got  (5)_____ on his back and his shoulders. I think he forgot to put on (6)_____ again after one of our (7)_____ in the sea.

It was (8)_____ around lunchtime – almost 37°C – and we (9)_____ playing volleyball. Luckily we had a big cooler box full of cold drinks and fresh fruit, so we had many things to help us (10)_____. There was also an ice cream shop opposite the beach, which was very convenient!

By mid afternoon the temperature was down to about 30°C, and there was a nice cool (11)_____ too. We packed up our things at about 4pm and went to a lovely cafe for a late lunch and an ice cold drink.

The average temperature has been about 35°C this summer, but I heard there is a (12)_____ coming next week and it’ll be around 40°C! Please take care and drink lots of water.
