This month Eri interviews Chris about Christmas.
Part 1
Do you have any plans for Christmas or New Year?
Not this year I’m afraid. Unfortunately I have to work until the 26th of December so I won’t be able to go back to England.
Do you usually go back to England at this time of year?
Not always. I didn’t go back last year, but I went back the year before last, and the year before that too.
Do you eat any special foods at New Year in England?
Not at New Year, no. Christmas has many special foods though. Christmas Pudding is delicious!
Christmas Pudding? What’s that?
There are many different recipes, but basically it’s a steamed cake made with dried fruits, and brandy. It has a rich taste and it’s quite heavy – but delicious!
Part 2
I’d like to try it! What else do you usually eat?
Well, Christmas Dinner is the traditional meal at Christmas. Again, there are many varieties of Christmas Dinner, but basically it’s roast turkey with stuffing, gravy and a selection of roasted and boiled vegetables. The turkey is usually served with cranberry sauce. For dessert, people eat Christmas Pudding, or maybe a ‘mince pie’.
Christmas Dinner is eaten on the 25th of December, in the afternoon.
Wow! It sounds great! You said some people eat ‘mince pie’ for dessert. Is that sweet minced meat?
It used to be, but a modern ‘mince pie’ doesn’t contain any meat. It’s a sweet pastry filled with dried fruits, cinnamon and nutmeg.
I can’t imagine that!
I’ve got some here actually! Would you like to try one?
